Airbnb Planner

Using AI to build features to enhance user experience

Year

2018

Role

UX/UI Designer

Project type

Self-initiated

About

This personal project has been created to complement the Airbnb Experiences released in 2016, still in beta at the time.

Airbnb Trip Planner is a feature that would use artificial intelligence to prepare to best trip possible for the users.

Many non-experienced travelers would find it difficult to plan a trip, especially in order to find the best spots, restaurants, deals or accomodations.

The idea is to bring exclusive and beautiful experiences to the travellers, with a major condition: respecting the environment. That is why we will encourage local initiatives, in order to minimize the footprint.

Research & Design Process

In total, we spent 2 weeks on the research. The market analysis helped us to discover that there's no offer such as this one that exists so far. It was very exciting because even as of today (2024), it does not exist.

We then conducted interviews, went to the cafés and in the street to ask people about how useful would they find this feature, and combined to the form we sent, some insights came out:

  • Most users find it stressful to have to build a holiday experience, as they expect a lot of it

  • 90% of the users mentioned that they would use the feature as long as it stays inside their budget

  • 86% of the users said that having a connection with a restaurant platform such as The Fork would make the experience even better to get a full package

  • Some users stated that if they have to choose between too many options, they might drop it, so it's important to keep it simple

Logotype

It is important to keep the simplicity of Airbnb branding.

The handwriting typeface creates a sentiment of proximity, as if it’s a friend helping you to prepare this trip.

The vivid red invites to the adventure, it’s energetic and encouraging. Contrasting this bright color with dark blue and green will help to soften the design

Obviously as a school project, we can't measure the impact with proper data. However I believe that with all the technology we have access today, and the progress with AI, this kind of feature could exist very soon, and it would be extremely useful!
